The research within engineering mechanics aims at studying and improving the dynamic interaction between the rail vehicles and track. Examples of aspects are derailment risk, running stability and ride comfort as well as wear and fatigue of wheels and rails. Meanwhile, there is strong desire for heavier freight trains and faster passenger trains. The studies are based on sophisticated computer simulations and field measurements. A good environment for travelers and train staff places demands on the sound and vibration environment in the vehicles. Society's demands for low noise require trains with low noise emissions. An environment where vehicles, track and transported goods do not take damage requires low levels of vibration. The research group in sound and vibration takes on these issues developing both theoretical models and performs measurements in our laboratories. Within lightweight structures, we perform research on the properties and manufacturing technologies of lightweight materials, e.g. sandwich materials, that are becoming increasingly important in all types of vehicles to reduce weight and thus energy consumption.

School of Architecture and the Built Environment
The research within infrastructure concerns the development of analytical methods for train-track-bridge-soil interaction, efficiency of operation and maintenance of infrastructure constructions, condition monitoring and economic optimization and LCC/LCA of railway bridges.
The research within capacity analysis aims at developing methods and contributing to knowledge to find cost-effective and attractive solutions to operate trains on the railway network.
The division conducts research within soil and rock engineering for railways structures, including foundations, embankments and tunnels. Research areas include behavior of embankment material, grouting and support of rock tunnels, deep soil mixing, ground vibrations and risk management.

School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
The research within electrical systems concerns the infrastructure for electrical power supply, and the traction systems for railway vehicles. Also research on hybrid locomotives is carried out.
In recent years also research on modern signalling systems like ERTMS and automatic train operation is carried out. Related topics are train positioning or cyber security.

The research covers triboligical aspects oin the wheel rail or wheel (brake disc) brake block contact. Research is partly experimental with measurements of for example the wear behaviour at different frictin levels, but also theoretical when it comes to model building. Another important research topic is particle emissions from railway traffic.
